You can die a hero or be alive long enough to witness yourself as a villain,” it’s said in The Dark Knight. Christian Bale is now a villain again, this time in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is formidable, and the plot sticks to the comic-book storyline as well. It also brings back the popular character of the audience, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Taika Waititi’s funny wit is evident. However, Love and Thunder, even though it’s an effective standalone film, does not quite compare to the previous Thor instalment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his standalone films either missed the mark completely or did not hit the mark. Although the origins story of Thor (2011) was an adequate start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was terrible entry. But, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 will be a top choice for everyone’s most-watched five MCU films. Expectations were high ahead of its release due to return of the Hemsworth/Taika waititi collaboration.
When Gorr (Bale) the god of war, who is seeking the death of gods after being disappointed by one, decides on attacking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god killer by joining forces with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has turned into Mighty Thor. The film is easy and simple, which is unlike Marvel’s previous movies. The acting is also very positive. Hemsworth performs well as the character who is going through an identity crisis. Bale and Portman are the most notable. The opening credits sequence stands as evidence of what Bale can accomplish. Gorr could have been the next Thanos for an MCU which is in desperate need of good superheroes, and Bale adds a touch of creepiness to the character, however, there’s nothing a much more.
Portman portrays Mjolnir’s cancer afflicted ex-girlfriend. Marvel appears to be keen on handing over the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to female characters. I expected the Mighty Thor would be similar to the checklist for representation. However, the film builds up a touching backstory for this astrophysicist who gets to show off her biceps in more than one scene.
Marvel does its own flexing through all the cameos featured in this film. Apart from the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team, we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also known as Hela and as the director for an Asgardian play. Waititi, who has since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his favorite genre. There are hilarious scenes like a pair of noisy goats, Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory Thor making leg-splits, or Valkyrie being the brand ambassador for Old Spice…
The main premise is that Thor wants to find his Mjolnir but is afraid of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. These gags work, but they are at the expense of deep emotion. They also expose the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder does deal with many types of love, from a father/daughter bond to the intricate romance between estranged lovers… It’s an analogy between Gorr losing his faith in the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor becoming disappointed with Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). These are just a few of the ideas, but…
Like always, there are plenty of Easter eggs, and even references to films such as Interstellar as well as Harry Potter. A scene of Falligar Dead God, is shown, directly from comic books. We can see Hemsworth wearing the first of the Thor costumes comic-book readers will recognize. When Thor wears his armor during an argument with Zeus We observe a tattoo which reads “RIP Loki’ with the helmet of the trickster etched onto the back of our space-based Viking. We’re introduced to dark Necrosword and also given the fact that Mjolnir and Stormbreaker seem to have an independent mind is fascinating to see more weapons being shown to have the ability to manipulate the people.
The scene we were shown using Shang Chi’s ten ring and Ms. Marvel’s dazzling Bangle, and the Ebony blade that was featured in the Eternals post-credits scene. Following the recent Marvel show, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but they will never let you down” is extremely relatable. A bit of Valkyrie’s loss in war to her greatest companion and Korg getting married to another Kronan man is also mentioned.
The first portion reminds us of the vibrant colors we enjoyed in Ragnarok The majority of the second part takes place in the dark realm where everything is monochrome and black. The action scenes that are monochrome can be quite satisfying and should be noted.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role However, it’s an incredible relief for MCU fans who have seen the first Avengers either give up their lives, or hang up their heads.
